How to work the Mesh Lace Stitch

The Mesh Lace Stitch is a light, openwork crochet pattern that creates a net-like or lace-like texture. It’s composed of a simple combination of chains and single crochets (or doubles, depending on your region), arranged in a way that forms a repeating, decorative design.

What makes it stand out?

  • It’s lightweight and breathable, making it ideal for warm weather.

  • It adds elegance to even the simplest shapes.

  • It’s versatile, so you can use it for clothing, accessories, and decor.

Where to Use It

This stitch really shines in summery, breezy, or even semi-formal projects. Some ideas?

  • Tops and tanks: breezy and stylish for beach or city wear.

  • Lacy shawls or wraps: perfect for layering over a dress or swimsuit.

  • Beach cover-ups: works beautifully in linen or recycled cotton yarns.

  • Evening accessories: try it with a silky yarn for a glam twist.

  • Decorative panels: add texture to plain garments or bags.

Best Yarn and Hook Pairings

For this swatch, we used:

  • 1 ball of Soy Cotton by Bettaknit in the shade Amber
  • 4 mm crochet hook

Here’s how to make your Mesh Lace Stitch really pop:

  • Lightweight cotton yarn: for freshness and structure, such as Love My Jeans from Bettaknit

  • Hemp: check out Bettaknit’s Hemp Cotton!
  • Recycled yarns: sustainable and gorgeous.

Tip: try using a slightly larger hook than what your yarn recommends, to make the pattern more open and soft.

Make It Your Own

Once you master the stitch, the possibilities are endless. Here’s how to add your personal style:

  • Use contrasting colors in stripes for a bold look.

  • Add a picot or shell border for a vintage vibe.

  • Combine it with solid stitches for a textured panel effect.

  • Create lace sleeves or inserts in plain sweaters or dresses.

This stitch also plays beautifully with accessories — try a lacy tote bag with a bold lining, or a market bag that’s both stylish and sustainable.
